Fujifilm’s X Half digital camera, initially priced at a staggering $850, wasn’t meant to replace your primary photography rig but certainly earned that impression thanks to its whimsical design and quirky features. The company slashed the MSRP to $649.99 and is offering an additional $100 discount through June 28th, bringing the base X Half down to approximately $549 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Adorama (with a free accessory pack). This compact camera, featuring a vertical 1-inch sensor and a fixed 32mm equivalent f/2.8 lens, captures 18-megapixel stills styled like half-frame film camerasโcomplete with film simulations, filters, grain, and digital diptychs that can even bake in the date. However, it trades modern conveniences for charm, lacking RAW image capture, a hot shoe for accessories, and an electronic viewfinder. Critics have praised its vertical 1-inch sensor and fixed lens for capturing great shots while being pocket-friendly, with former Verge producer Vjeran Pavic calling it both whimsical and refreshing. Yet, its simplicity might turn some awayโlike Antonio Di Bennedetoโwho were initially daunted by the original price tag but ultimately enjoyed “scrappy, quick photos” thanks to the X Half’s point-and-shoot ease. So, is the X Half worth the $549โor even the original $850? Perhaps only if you’re ready to embrace a few quirks and forego some modern photography staples.
