Amazon MGM just dropped Luca Guadagnino’s film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, titled “Artificial,” leaving us to ponder whether the cinematic universe of AI overlords needed a sabbatical or if Amazon just got bored faster than ChatGPT on a Tuesday.
The film stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, portraying the five tumultuous days in 2023 when Altman was fired and then swiftly reinstated as CEO—basically, “The Social Network” meets “Groundhog Day,” with Altman living the same week over and over again, each time with a different cast of tech royalty. Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz channels Elon Musk, and Yura Borisov steps into Ilya Sutskever’s shoes—so basically, a full-blown Silicon Valley ensemble, minus the quirky office antics.
Guadagnino’s vision had been cooking for about a year, with Amazon MGM believing it was the perfect recipe to blend drama, tech intrigue, and a dash of Hollywood glamour. But apparently, the studio thought the film would thrive under a different label—perhaps Netflix, which could have draped Altman’s saga in streaming glory, or Apple TV+, where the tech ties might have been even tighter.
In their statement to Deadline, Amazon MGM declared that “Artificial” will be better served elsewhere, suggesting they’re either saving face after an early preview or simply craving a fresh set of credits. The studio is now collaborating closely with Guadagnino and the cast to find a new home—maybe HBO Max could have paired it with “Silicon Valley” reruns for maximum synergy, or Paramount+ might have embraced it as part of their tech-heavy lineup.
So, will “Artificial” get its moment in the spotlight elsewhere? Or is Amazon MGM just trading one screen test for another, hoping the next studio will appreciate Altman’s rollercoaster ride enough to give it a proper premiere? Either way, the AI drama lives on—just not under the Amazon MGM banner yet.
