Smart Window in Firefox, Mozilla’s AI-driven browsing experience, now boasts AI-powered form filling and webpage monitoring. This update allows Smart Window to populate online forms with information gleaned from your open tabs, such as pulling details from your online portfolio or LinkedIn to fill in your work history on a job application. To try it out, click into a form with at least four text fields, then select “Fill from sources” to see tabs Firefox will use, which you can customize before generating AI suggestions based on the information.
However, one might question the AI’s discernment—does it truly know which tab holds the most relevant data? Imagine selecting your LinkedIn profile, only for the AI to mistakenly insert your favorite pizza toppings into the job description. While the feature is nifty, it assumes all tabs are equally pertinent, overlooking that a tab with a recent project summary might trump a decade-old portfolio snapshot.
Moreover, the requirement of at least four text fields is somewhat arbitrary. What if a form has three fields but they’re crucial? Does the AI shrink in enthusiasm, or does it simply skip to the next available set of tabs? This rigidity might leave users wondering if the AI is just being finicky or if it genuinely needs a numerical threshold to feel smart.
Additionally, the integration of AI form filling raises the question of consistency. Will the AI seamlessly handle various form types—say, from a simple contact form to a complex e-commerce checkout? Or will it stumble, inserting your favorite color into the shipping address field? The promise is there, but the execution may still be in beta, leaving us to wonder if Firefox’s Smart Window is truly ready to be our AI scribe or just a clever but occasionally clumsy assistant.
