Roku has bumped up the prices of its streaming hardware by as much as $50, making the Roku Ultra now a whopping $149.99 instead of the former $99.99. The Streaming Stick lineup also got a slice of the price increase: from $29.99 to $39.99 for the basic model, and up to $79.99 for the 4K version. Meanwhile, the Roku Streambar SE saw a similar jump from $99.99 to $149.99.

But wait, does Roku really need to charge an arm and a leg just to stream Netflix? With many competitors offering comparable features at lower prices, it’s hard not to question whether this price hike is justified. The Streaming Stick Plus, for instance, went from $39.99 to $59.99—essentially doubling its cost in the blink of an eye.

Assuming Roku’s marketing team did their homework, they might argue that the higher prices reflect improved specs and added functionalities. Yet, isn’t it a bit rich to claim that a few extra bells and whistles justify a $50 jump for the Ultra? Sure, the Roku Ultra once reigned supreme with its voice remote and speedy performance, but now it feels like you’re paying premium for essentially the same experience found in other smart TVs or streaming devices.

Moreover, Roku’s own sale pages occasionally list original prices, suggesting that the new rates might be a bit of sticker shock rather than a long-term deal. With Amazon and Apple also vying for streaming dominance, Roku could have leveraged its strengths—like extensive channel support—to stay competitive without alienating budget-conscious consumers. So, while the price hike makes sense on paper, it might just end up roasting Roku’s wallet-friendly image in the eyes of everyday viewers.
